Frequently Asked Questions

in

The following are questions that have been asked by our constituents. If you have additional questions regarding the annual campaign, please do not hesitate to contact Cletus McConville, development coordinator, at ext. 7039 or via e-mail at pggiving@pitt.edu.

Where can I direct my gift?

You can give to any area of the University you choose. There are specific funds that you are encouraged to support, but it's up to you, and your choices are almost limitless: academic programs, scholarships, endowments, facilities, department equipment funds, student support, the Millstein library, athletics, or the general fund.

How much am I expected to give?

Where you direct your gift and how much you give is a personal decision. The University only encourages you to support programs you believe in, at whatever amount you are comfortable giving.

Are there any personal benefits I will receive from contributing?

While helping the program of your choice, you will be able to write your gift off as a tax credit. Your name will also be placed in a pool that makes you eligible to win great prizes during the two rounds of the campaign.

Do other employers expect employees to make a donation? You don't see Kennametal or Elliott Group asking their employees for contributions!

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, unlike most employers, is a non-profit organization. Like other non-profit institutions of higher education, Pitt-Greensburg is a charity, and virtually every charity asks its employees to be the first line of support when it comes to philanthropic investment. We are also a private institution in which various government funding streams only make up less than 10% of our annual operating budget. The university is reliant upon philanthropic investment and that is the driving force behind delivering excellence.

How can my contribution make a difference to Pitt-Greensburg?

First, the power of the "multiplying effect" means that many modest gifts made by University employees add up to a huge and significant amount: over $21,000 was donated during the last campaign.

Second, the University is made up of many smaller, individual departments & programs; many depend heavily on outside support to fulfill their mission.

And third, the example employees set through their gifts is not overlooked by outside donors. Alumni, corporations, foundations, and other friends are impressed by the fact that those who know the University best-its staff and faculty-endorse and support its operations out of their own pockets. Participation is essential.

Are there other ways of giving besides payroll deduction?

While payroll deduction is the most simple, cost-effective, and-many believe- best way to provide ongoing support to the program(s) of their choice, it is by no means the only way employees can give. Checks, gifts-in-kind, securities, and planned options such as bequests and trusts, are all methods of supporting Pitt-Greensburg and count toward the Partners In Excellence campaign.

I have never heard of Partners in Excellence?

Partners in Excellence is simply a campaign name and a means by which Pitt-Greensburg staff and faculty may make a gift to Pitt-Greensburg. The name is used for clarity and to bring new attention and enthusiasm to what has been a very successful program in the past.

How long does the campaign last?

The campaign takes place from September 3 to November 12. To be eligible to win prizes, an individual must donate within this time. It is important to note that a person may still give after November 12 and anytime throughout the year, however he or she will not be eligible to win any prizes.

Who can I contact, or where can I go if I have questions regarding the campaign?

Cletus McConville, development coordinator, is the contact for any questions concerning the campaign. He may be reached via phone at 724-836-7039, or via email at pggiving@pitt.edu.
