Fulbright Speaker at Pitt-Greensburg

Jess Kuntz, a Fulbright Scholar and Georgetown University alumna, will be on campus for an information session entitled “Navigating the Fulbright Application Process: Tips from an Alumna”. Each year, some 1,600 U.S. students travel to more than 155 countries as “Fulbrighters,” conducting field research, teaching English, and acting as the face of the United States abroad. Fulbright alumna Jessica Kuntz will share information about available programs and offer advice on crafting a successful grant application. Students can apply for Fulbrights after graduating, so seniors are most welcome.

In Croatia, Jess researched Croatia’s political culture during its democratic transition focusing specifically on the Yugoslav legacy. She volunteered at the Institute for the Development of Education where she advised local students interested in studying in the United States and co-coordinated the first ever conference for Croatian alumni of American exchange programs. She now works at Edelman Public Relations in the Public Affairs practice group.

PHI KAPPA PHI ANNUAL INITIATION CEREMONY & DINNER - FRIDAY APRIL 12, 2013 5:45PM, Hempfield Room

The annual ceremony to induct new members will be held after the Honors Convocation on Friday April 12, 2013. The dinner and ceremony will be held in the Hempfield Room of Chambers Hall beginning at about 5:45pm. Alll members and new initiates are welcome, new initiates are free, guests plus current and faculty/staff/alumni members are $14 - please contact Beth Tiedemann, Chapter Secretary & Treasurer at  tiedeman@pitt.edu for reservations and other information.

Other events for 2012-2013 are currently being planned and will be posted later. We are looking for interested students and faculty to present their recent research for the Colloquium Series this fall or spring. Please contact Dr. Paul S. Adams at padams@pitt.edu if interested!

he Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi continues its fourth year of sponsorship of the Phi Kappa Phi Colloquium Series where faculty and students are able to present recent research findings, conference presentations, and other professional development work to the faculty and students in the numerous honor societies on campus. The event provides not only a presentation of recent Pitt-Greensburg Faculty and Student research but also an opportunity to discuss and discover the differences amongst the many disciplines in academia in terms of expectations, norms, and procedures in terms of scholarship and professional activities. Dr. Sayre Greenfield, Professor of English at Pitt-Greensburg, will present "Something Rotten: How We Came to Quote Hamlet", drawn from his in process manuscript and upcoming conference presentation in November. Open to all interested faculty, honor society students, and other community members.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi continues its tradition of Colloquium of Faculty and Student Research and Conference ScholarChemistry clip artship. Chemistry majors and Chemistry Honor Society (Gamma Sigma Epsilon) members Zak Willis and Ryan Jakubek present their poster presentation that was also presented at the 26th International Forum and Exhibition of Process Analytical Technology in Baltimore in January 2012 under the guidance of Pitt-Greensburg Professor Mark Stauffer.

Sigma Tau Delta Conference Student Presenters from Pitt-Greensburg

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi continued its tradition of Colloquium of Faculty and Student Research and Conference Scholarship. For this event we welcomed four student members of Sigma Tau Delta who are presenting at the Sigma Tau Delta National Convention in New Orleans, LA March 1-3, 2012. Joseph Saccamago, also a student vice president of Phi Kappa Phi, presented his work "DifferentWorlds: Anne Bradstreet and Sor Juana Ines dela Cruz"; Jenna Szypulski presented her poems "The Dog's a Devil"; Gloria Grancea presents her work "The Woman Poet Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz", and Katie Pagano presents her poems "Tight Weaving and Other Agitations". The Phi Kappa Phi Colloquium Series brings students and faculty from all of the campus honor societies together to celebrate our intellectual and scholarly efforts. Beyond the research we also discuss the norms and expectations of conference presentations and scholarship across the many disciplines represented on campus. Open to all faculty, staff, and student honor society representatives and members.

"Building a Virtual Reality Model of Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty" with Dr. Stephen A. Schrum and Elliot Sheedy

The Pitt-Greensburg Chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi continued its third year of presenting faculty and student research from across all disciplines thrArtaudough the Phi Kappa Phi Colloquim Series. Our first presentation of the year was "Building a Virtual Reality Model of Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty" by Dr. Stephen A. Schrum, associate professor of theatre arts, and Pitt-Greensburg student Elliot Sheedy who presented this project as part of the panel, "The Past As Prologue to the Digital Age: Memory and Legacy As the Future's Foundation" at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education held in Chicago in August 2011.

Pitt-Greensburg Member Wins Scholarship through Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Award!

The National Office of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has selected Deidre Stuffer, our chapter nominee for the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship, as one of the 50 award winners for 2011-2012! Deidre has won a $5000 Fellowship scholarship to help her pay for graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison beginning Fall 2012. Deidre was one of 175 eligible chapter nominees from colleges and universities across the United States and overseas. Congratulations to Deidre! April 21, 2011 Colloquim Presentation by Richard Manilla

On Thursday April 21, 2011 from 12-1 p.m. in Village Hall 118, Rick Manilla, Senior Political Science student and PhiRick Manilla Kappa Phi Chapter Vice President, will present the final talk of the Pitt-Greensburg Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Colloqium Series of 2010-2011. Mr. Manilla research stemming from his Political Science Capstone research is entitled: "The Relationship of Economic Liberalism and Dependency Theory: Lessons Learned from Water Privatization in Bolivia”.

April 13, 2011 Colloqium Presentation by Dr. Steven Hirsch

On Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Village Hall 118, Dr. Steven Hirsch, Associate Professor ofDr. Steven J. Hirsch History at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, will present the next installment in the Pitt-Greensburg Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Colloqium Series for 2010-2011. Dr. Hirsch's talk is entitled: "Constructing a Radical Working-Class Culture - The Influence of Transnational Anarchism and the Anarchist Press in Northern Peru: 1898-1922”.

April 8, 2011 - Initiation Ceremony, Hempfield Room

On Friday, April 8, 2011, the Pitt-Greensburg Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi initiated new members at a ceremony held in the Hempfield Room of Chambers Hall. The ceremony's guestprogram of ceremonies speaker was Dr. Rick Shale, Professor of English from Youngstown State University and the North Central Regional Representative of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Shale's talk, entitled "Excellence and Honor" capped a full day of honors events including the Pitt-Greensburg Honors Convocation and the Phi Kappa Phi Initiation Ceremony. New Student Vice Presidents for 2011-2012 Selected!

New inductees Kaley Clark, Joseph Saccamago, and Morgan Miller are set to become the new Student Vice Presidents for 2011-2012. The chapter is eager to put them to work to improve the visibility of Phi Kappa Phi on campus and to increase acceptance rates of new invitees. In addition, the student vice presidents will be seeking opportunities for Phi Kappa Phi to expand its campus presence and community outreach. Congratulations!
