Chemistry

Welcome to the Chemistry program at Pitt-Greensburg!

Our program, which leads to a Bachelor of Science degree, is rather new, having been approved by the Provost's Office in April 2008 and officially launched at the beginning of the Fall Term 2008.  Presently, our program offers courses in general, organic, analytical, physical and inorganic chemistry, with an elective course in spectral interpretation being offered on a semi-regular basis, and elective courses in advanced organic chemistry, intermediate analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, and environmental chemistry ready to be offered, under development, or on the drawing board.  We also have a growing undergraduate research effort that has produced already a number of conference presentations and publications and awardees (Phil Sharrow, 2nd-place in chemistry, 2008 Undergraduate Research Symposium, UMBC; and Kim Roman, 2009 Conn Awardee, Gamma Sigma Epsilon 2009 Biennial Meeting, and 2nd place in chemistry, 2009 Undergraduate Research Symposium, UMBC).  We have a nice selection of instruments (UV-Vis spectrophotometers, fluorometers, a flame atomic absorption spectrometer, a gas chromatograph, a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, a high performance liquid chromatograph, an ion chromatograph, and a Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer), with the GC/MS and FTIR instruments purchased since late 2008.  We even have a local chapter of the Gamma Sigma Epsilon national chemistry honor society, Rho Theta!  Stay tuned to this website -- more exciting events and programs are on their way.  Be patient!!!

Sincerely,

The chemistry faculty
