Softball opens 2012 AMCC Playoffs with 2-1 heartbreaking loss
Erie, PA- Pitt-Greensburg freshman Sarah Sopko (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning but Mt. Aloysius recorded two hits and a run in the bottom of the seventh to up end Pitt-Greensburg 2-1 in the first round of the 2012 AMCC Softball Tournament. The Bobcats will play D'Youville College on Saturday, May 5th at 9:00 AM in an elimination game.
Pitt-Greensburg scored their only run in the top of the first inning. With one out Danielle Straub (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) and Nicolette McHugh (Bulger, PA/Fort Cherry) singled. After an infield pop-up for the second out Devan Zelonish (Hubbard, OH/Hubbard) hit an infield single to third and Straub was able to score the whole way from second to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
Mt. Aloysius tied the game in the bottom half of the first without recording a hit.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh. Mt. Aloysius’ McDowell led off the inning with their first hit if the contest and advanced to second on a wild pitch, the scored the game winning run on an RBI double by Ayers.
Sopko threw a complete game two hitter. She struck out eight and walked only three.
