Chemistry major at Pitt-Greensburg

A Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is an immensely versatile degree for Pitt-Greensburg students who wish to pursue careers in industry, business, communications, government, agricultural and food science, materials science, clinical science, and environmental science.

The degree also can lead to opportunities for graduate study in the health-related professions, particularly in the medical and dental fields, and opportunities for graduate study in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, and other sciences.

Special Information

A note to our first-year students who have already declared chemistry as their major: Start thinking ahead about your capstone undergraduate research project, which you will begin upon completion of CHEM 1702 (Undergraduate Research Writing), at the end of your junior year. Two-and-a-half years can pass by quickly. Start talking with the chemistry and/or the biology faculty about possible research topics that may interest you OR about the research projects that the chemistry and/or biology faculty members are engaged in at present.

A note to our chemistry majors who will begin their junior (third) year in August 2013: You will be expected to register for CHEM 1702 (Undergraduate Research Writing) for Spring Term 2014. This is the course in which you will be required to select your capstone undergraduate research project AND faculty advisor. The Fall Term can certainly fly by and be history before you know it. So start thinking about your capstone research project and a potential faculty advisor for it.

A note to ALL of our chemistry majors:  Please be aware that CHEM 1130 (Inorganic Chemistry), CHEM 1250 (Instrumental Analysis), CHEM 1255 (Instrumental Analysis Laboratory), CHEM 1410 (Physical Chemistry 1), CHEM 1420 (Physical Chemistry 2), and CHEM 1430 (Physical Chemistry Laboratory) will be offered on a yearly basis, starting in Fall Term 2015 (Term 2161).  CHEM 1130 and CHEM 1410 will be offered every Fall Term, and CHEM 1250 & 1255 and CHEM 1420 & 1430 will be offered every Spring Term.  These courses are upper-level chemistry courses, so be sure to check with the chemistry faculty as well as the Registrar's Office regarding pre- and co-requisites for the aforementioned courses.

SLC Scholarship Program

Pitt-Greensburg has been awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase the retention and graduation rates of students in Biology or Chemistry. Through the Science Learning Community (SLC) program, scholarships of up to $10,000 per year for a period of up to four years are available to eligible academically talented students from high schools serving Fayette and Washington Counties and rural areas of Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania.
