Student/Institutional Diversity Groups

Our campus is home to a number of organizations - both student and employee-led - which celebrate diversity and address issues related to inclusion and equality.

Learn more below about each of these organizations and how to get involved with them; if you are interested in starting a new student diversity group, please complete this brief informational survey!

Student Groups

Active Minds

Active Minds is a national 501(c)3 organization that empowers students to speak openly about mental health in order to educate others and encourage help-seeking.  We are changing the culture on campuses and in the community by providing information, leadership opportunities and advocacy training to the next generation.

Through campus-wide events and national programs, Active Minds aims to remove the stigma that surrounds mental health issues and create a comfortable environment for an open conversation about mental health issues on campuses nationwide. (www.activeminds.org)

The Pitt-Greensburg chapter wants to urge our students to think of mental health like dental health; it requires proper maintenance, regular check-ups, repair of damage or injury and preventative care.

Black Student Union (BSU)

The Black Student Union (BSU) works to promote the cultural, educational, political, and social needs of black students. They are dedicated to converging the black student body into a more united and positive union.

Christian Fellowship Club

The Christian Fellowship Club gathers weekly and participates and plans other events on and off campus.

Diversity Student Coalition (DSC)

This organization is dedicated to engaging and involving students of different races and ethnicities in campus and community issues.

We are committed to uniting different cultures and races on campus and voicing every student’s ideas and thoughts. This organization is also dedicated to stimulating knowledge and interest of campus issues and to promoting debates, talks, fundraiser ideas, volunteering, activities, and other events at the university. Please contact Al Thiel for more information.

Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)

Pitt-Greensburg's Gender and Sexuality Alliance is an organization that fosters a comfortable, safe, confidential, and nondiscriminatory atmosphere of awareness and acceptance to all individuals. This club provides University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg's student body with valuable and viable resources such as meetings, events, discussions, and guest speakers, and partnered organizations to help vitalize and establish education and awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community. We work to guarantee that all individuals of the student body at Pitt-Greensburg, regardless of orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, will be provided with an experience of equality, without prejudice, persecution, or intolerance.

Faculty/Staff/Administration Groups

Allies Network

The Pitt-Greensburg Allies Network provides a visible source of support and information for individuals whose sexual or gender identity is underrepresented. While other underrepresented individuals usually can identify role models and mentors, the relative invisibility of sexual and gender diversity makes it more difficult for LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) members of a university community to figure out where they can safely turn for similar support.

The Allies Network identifies and trains individuals to provide those resources. Upon completion of the training, staff and faculty can choose to take an Allies Network sign for their office wall or door. To find an Allies Network member, look for the rainbow paw print sign! Like us on Facebook!

Committee for Gender Equity

The Pitt-Greensburg Committee for Gender Equity was formed in 2014 and is part of a research partnership between our campus, Blackburn Center, the community-based victim service agency in Westmoreland County, and Seton Hill University. The Committee for Gender Equity (CGE) is made up of faculty, staff, administrators and students at Pitt-Greensburg. The broad focus of the CGE/Blackburn project is to develop a comprehensive campus initiative to change the attitudes and behaviors on the Pitt-Greensburg campus that perpetuate rape culture, and the belief that gender-based violence is inevitable. The committee has used an annual student assessment to identify areas of concern for targeted programming and training.

For more information on the committee and its work, please contact Sheila Confer, EdD at sec10@pitt.edu or Timothy Holler, PhD at tjh67@pitt.edu.
