Frequently Asked Questions: ID Card

Have a question about your ID Card? Look for the answer below or contact Student Life & Success at 724-836-7869 or 724-836-9917.

Where do I submit my ID Card Photo?

You will receive an individualized email from Panther Central (pcnoreply@pitt.edu) with instructions on how to upload your photo.

Who is eligible to use the ID Card Photo Submission Application?

All students, faculty and staff are eligible to submit a photo. Your confirmation email will explain if your photo was accepted and provide further information on how to obtain your card.

Newly hired faculty members must have an active contract with the university in order to submit a photo and receive an ID Card. Student Life cannot preprint your ID Card prior to your contract being activated.

Newly hired staff members can submit photos on or after their hire date.

Do I need to follow up with Student Life ID Center once I submit my photo?

There is no need to follow up with Student Life ID Center after you submit your photo.  You will receive a confirmation email once your photo has been reviewed.

Can I punch a hole in my ID Card?

No! Do not punch a hole in your ID Card. You will damage and potentially deactivate the magnetic strip and damage the chip inside. If your card has been intentionally damaged or shows signs of negligence, you will have to pay a $30 replacement fee.

If I lose my ID Card, how can I access my residence hall and meal plan?

Notify our office by email UPGSS@pitt.edu or by calling us at 724-836-7869 or 724-836-9917 so that we can print a replacement card.  We will use the photo that is currently in the system so you won’t have to submit a new photo.  The cost for a replacement card is $30 and can be paid by cash or money order in the Student Life Office (219 Chambers Hall) or by credit/debit card in the business office (ML 134).  After a replacement has been issued, your old card is deactivated and will no longer work.

If you lose your ID Card after office hours, contact Campus Police.

Why is there a charge to obtain a new ID Card if mine is lost?

There are internal costs for manufacturing University ID cards. The University does not charge you for your initial ID, however, any IDs that the University has to replace due to loss or damage is charged to the customer.

Do I have to have my card with me all of the time?

You should always have your ID Card with you while you are attending the University. Your card identifies you as a current student, staff, or faculty member, and it gives you access and privileges to library, computer labs, on-campus printing stations, your residence hall, your meal plan and the fitness center.

When does my ID Card expire?

As an active student registered for the fall or spring term, your card will remain valid for a predetermined amount of time, based on the department or program you are registered with. If you are a registered summer student only, your card is valid through August of that year.

For faculty, your ID Card will remain active per your departmental contract and will expire upon your contract end date. For staff and tenured faculty, your ID Card will remain active for five years pending active employment.

Your card’s expiration date will be amended based on your change of relationship with the University such as, change in enrollment status, graduation, expiration of contract and/or termination from the University.

Can anyone else pick up my ID Card for me?

No. Only YOU can pick up your ID Card.

Can I change my picture at a later time?

Yes, you can certainly upload a new photo at any time, but keep in mind that there is a $30 replacement fee, and you will need to exchange your old ID Card for your new one.

Is there a cost to have my ID Card pre-printed?

Your first ID Card is free, but all other reprints of your ID Card will cost $30. You will also need to exchange your old ID Card in order to have a new one printed (unless your card was lost/stolen).

If you are relocating from another Pitt campus, you do not need to submit another photo.  You will be required to exchange your old ID Card before we are able to print your Greensburg card.
